Given the freedom to roam as a child in the English Lake District, Duncan developed an acute visual perception of the world around him. He discovered photography while studying piano with the London College of Music. After arriving in Canada in 1952 he continued his interests in both music and photography, completing studies in photography at the Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto.

For over 30 years Duncan has been a commercial photographer, working with medium and large format cameras, tungsten lights and electronic flash. These skills have helped him in his personal work.

In 1970 Duncan was awarded his Fellowship in the Royal Photographic Society. He has taught photography at U.B.C., had several National and International exhibitions and has accumulated an impressive list of International Awards. His work is in corporate and private collections.
